Jan 10: Planet Supra improves 7-Eleven store insulation by 30% (video)

PTT (Petroleum Authority of Thailand) operates 7-Eleven convenience stores in its gas stations accross Thailand and was looking for a cost-efficient way to reduce their air-conditioning bill.

As part of PTT's Green Gas Stations initiative, a store's metal sheet rooftop was coated with Planet Supra Thermal Barrier Paint in January 2010 in Bangkok, Thailand.

The roof's temperature dropped by more than 30°C. Subsequent measurements showed that Planet Supra was even more cost-efficient than installing PU foam insulation under the roof.

By an ambient temperature above 25°C like in Thailand, the first coat (only 100 microns/0.1mm thick) is dry to the touch in 30 minutes only. The second coat (also 100 microns) can be applied right after finishing the first one. The whole project was completed within one day, without disturbing the store's operations.

Step 3: measure temperature difference with electronic temperature recorder

These devices recorded temperatures every 10 minutes, for one week before and one week after painting, at various locations on the store's roof.

The store's heat load is now 30% lower, which stranslates into substantial savings on air-conditioning.

The metal sheet roof also expands and contracts less, since temperature variation amplitude is reduced. On the long term, this reduces risks of leakage and prolongs the roof's lifespan.
